Why I started the Menopause Running Club

About Gabrielle

In my late 40s I retrained as a Personal Trainer.

Menopause was changing my body, but just working out and eating healthy wasn’t working anymore.

Most of the advice I found was from male or younger trainers, or women who’d been training professionally all their lives. I didn’t feel like my situation was understood by the fitness industry, so I decided to find the answers myself.

Running had been a lifelong passion. My motivation to run had disappeared, but a holiday in the Alps when I was 52, reignited the spark. But despite being ‘fit and strong’ and having lost 30lb of menopause weight, it wasn’t enough, I was plagued by injuries, niggles and stalling performance.

So I embarked on yet another journey to find out how to train and eat to become a stronger and more resilient runner.

Today, I’ve transformed my training to support my running ambitions, because running is such an important part of my life - and I don’t want to stop.

And through The Menopause Running Club, I can share that knowledge and support other women who share that passion.

How menopause affects runners:

  • More aches and pains and slower recovery

  • More downtime from niggles, injury, tendon issues

  • Changing gait - feeling more ‘ploddy’

  • Low energy and runs feeling harder despite consistent training

  • Less strength and power, hills feel harder

  • Reduced balance and less agile, less confident on uneven ground
